Industrial landscape across the Columbia river: a large smelter and factory complex with smokestacks on a hill, surrounded by trees, under a clear blue sky in Trail, British Columbia, Canada

Project Overview

Project background: A Canadian forestry mill required equipment replacement and mechanical integration to address reliability constraints and improve material flow through a critical process area. Work was executed during a planned outage with strict access and lift constraints.

Client sector: Forestry / pulp & paper operations.

Project goals: Complete equipment setting, tie-ins, and readiness for start-up within the shutdown window while maintaining safe execution, installation quality, and clean turnover documentation.

Client Challenge

The outage window was fixed, with constrained access and lift planning requirements inside an operating mill. Installation sequencing had to align with upstream/downstream process interfaces while maintaining safety controls and start-up readiness.

Scope of Work

  • Equipment setting, alignment, and anchoring for replacement components
  • Mechanical installation including supports, spools, and field fit-up tie-ins
  • Structural steel modifications for access, supports, and maintenance clearances
  • Fabrication of brackets, guards, and installation hardware to suit as-built conditions
  • Shutdown sequencing support, cutover readiness, and start-up coordination

Execution

  • Industrial mechanical installation
  • Structural steel and supports
  • Shop and field fabrication
  • Electrical coordination for equipment interfaces and commissioning readiness
  • Shutdown services and outage execution support

Results

  • Schedule performance: Coordinated lifts, staging, and installation sequencing to support on-time cutover within a fixed outage window.
  • Safety performance: Controlled work fronts, lift planning, and permit compliance aligned to mill safety requirements.
  • Technical challenges solved: Field-fit integration to existing structures and tie-in points, maintaining alignment tolerances and access clearances.
